The night sleeper express Reimei. Out of a northern port town at 22:00, into Tokyo at 05:00. After thirty years of service, tonight is her last run.

One private sleeper carriage has been booked out by the seventy-two-year-old engineer who designed her. Seven people are invited: a daughter, a former colleague, a bereaved daughter, a retired driver, a journalist, an executive, and the conductor working the train tonight. Every one of them is tied to a night thirty years ago.

As he boarded, he said this:

Before we reach the terminus, there is something I want to say over the public address. Something I have kept quiet for thirty years.

The only stop is three minutes at 01:58. Nobody got off. Nobody got on.

At 02:45 he was found dead in compartment three, with the mark of a trunk strap on his throat. The train is still moving, and there are two hours and fifteen minutes left.

For four of the seven players, the winning condition is not getting it right. It is saying out loud the one thing they have spent thirty years not saying. You can name the killer correctly and still lose.

How it plays

One person hosts. The host runs the game and does not solve it — that is standard for Japanese-style murder mystery, and it is what lets the story hold things back the way it does. Every line the host reads aloud is written out, in order, in the Host Script.

Seven players is the largest cast in this series, and the longest running time. The Host Script carries two scripted rounds of the table, so nobody sits silent while three people talk.
